It All Adds Up!

Many kids long for that magical age of seventeen when they can finally start to drive. Some with Saturday jobs start to save in advance to get their first car, but they are invariably surprised at how much it costs to get them up and running.

First there is the car itself. Most young learners opt for a second hand car as they are bound to get a few scratches and bumps along the way. The thing to remember is to find a car where the insurance costs will not be too high, so it is wise to choose one with a smaller engine. Young driver car insurance is expensive enough as it is, and with good reason, as the claim rate is so high.

As tempting as it is to go for the cheapest car available, though, a word of warning. If you buy one that is in poor repair you will face MOT problems and may end up having to fork out for on-going repairs.

Then there is the cost of the driving lessons. Even if a brave parent is willing to take you out as a co-driver it is always advisable to take at least a few lessons with a professional to make sure you are safe to go out on the road.

And then, of course, there are the petrol costs, so buy a car that is as fuel efficient as possible.
